Railway Electrification goes upto 16209 Route Km
New Delhi: May 12, 2003

Indian Railways has so far electrified 25 per cent of its route network. As on April this year, the total electrified route comes to 16209 kilometre, covering all major trunk routes of the network including Howarah-Delhi, Howrah-Mumbai, Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Chennai sections. Work is fast progressing in the remaining two routes of Mumbai-Chennai and Kolkota-Chennai.

During the financial year 2001-02 a total of 603 route kilometres spread across different Zonal railways has been electrified as against 414 km during 2000-01. As of now, sixty per cent of freight and forty seven per cent of passenger traffic are hauled on electric traction.
