|
New Delhi: May 20, 2003
The Union Minister of Railways Shri Nitish Kumar has released a book titled "Handbook of Building Construction, the Essential Source of Construction Practices", written by Shri M.M. Goyal, a civil engineer of repute, at a function here this evening. The Chairman Railway Board Shri I.I.M.S Rana, Member Engineering Shri Kanwarjit Singh, other Members of Railway Board and senior officials of the Government were present on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, the Railway Minister Shri Nitish Kumar said that the book would be quite useful to modern construction industry as a ready reference and handy guide to the engineers. He congratulated the author for his onerous efforts and urged other railway engineers to emulate Shri Goyal. The Minister was happy to note that the book would serve as a practical guidelines extracted from different fields of civil engineering relevant to building construction.
The book lays special emphasis on modern construction practices like rainwater harvesting, thermal insulation of roods, welding, advanced glazing systems, tile flooring and so on. It is essentially a reference manual having extensive coverage of modern construction materials, such as UPVC pipes and fittings, plywood and block board, pressed steel doorframes, steel doors and windows. The handbook brings out salient specifications in a concise manner of all the building materials, fittings and fixtures and contains over 200 Tables of Specifications. It thus supplements the Standard Specifications issued by the Government Departments. The book has over 500 sketches in Auto Computer Aided Design (CAD) to illustrate a concept.
The distinguishing feature of the Handbook is the breadth of the subjects included in the book and their authoritative coverage based on Indian Standards Codes of Practices. The bibliography has a list of 500 IS codes which have been referred in the text.
The second major strength of the book is the reader friendliness of the book's structure. Even though the book runs into nearly 900 pages, the author did not succumb to the temptation of splitting the book into more than one volume to promote its commercial appeal. There is one Table of Contents and one Index for ease of reference, which will ensure its lasting usefulness to the practising professionals in the field.
