Cleanliness drive on Railways
New Delhi: May 14, 2003

The Railways have planned a cleanliness drive to be known as Clean Train Stations (CTS) to provide mechanized enroute cleaning of trains at the interval of 10-12 hours within 10-12 minutes at 50 major stations.

The Clean Train Stations will involve cleaning, disinfection and drying of toilets in all reserved coaches, collection and replacement of waste disposable bags, swabbing and aisle area and mopping of passenger cabins, spray of anti-mosquito deodorant, and wiping of platform side windows of AC coaches.

Under the scheme, 14,098 persons will be employed for cleaning 39,257 coaches every day. In addition, 12,124 employees will be recruited for coaching depots. Besides, 2,443 employees will be needed at 188 major stations for cleaning 1000 platforms. Additionally, 341 travelling safaiwalas will also be needed.

This follows announcement by the Prime Minister on August 15, 2002 and action plan worked out by a multi-disciplinary task force under the chairmanship of Member (Mechanical), Railway Board.

In this connection, a pilot project for mechanized cleaning of trains has been tried at Ratlam successfully as an experimental measure with M/S Eureka Forbs.

Buoyed by its success at Ratlam, 14 more stations, Bhopal, Nagpur, Mughalsarai, Patna, Allahabad, Lucknow, Delhi, Gorakhpur, New Jalpaiguri, Chennai, Erode, Guntakal, Vijayawada and Ahmedabad have been earmarked for mechanized Clean Train Stations.

When fully fructified, the mechanized Clean Train Stations at 50 stations, will cost Indian Railway a sum of Rs. 100 crores.
