The Festival is held from 14th to 24th May, 2003 is one of the largest and oldest annual congregation of the global fraternity of the film industry. This event provides an opportunity to the film industry of the entire world to showcase products, promote films and transact commercial business.

The delegation to the Cannes Film Market, jointly organized with CII, is a part of the Government's overall strategy to support the Indian industry in marketing its products and services globally. The previous Indian participation in Cannes, the organizing of Film Bazaar 2002 alongwith the International Film Festival of India and the Indian participation in the Hong Kong and American Film Markets are some of the initiatives already taken in this direction.

The Government of India will extend support in terms of common expenditure and diplomatic initiatives to promote the film industry. Specifically, the Government is supporting the exercise to enhance visibility through advertising and generating publicity about the Indian film industry during the Cannes Film Market. Therefore, while individual companies would further their own commercial interests, there would be collective efforts to promote Brand India by showcasing the country's varied locations available for filming by foreign teams, a collage of the landmark films set against the backdrop of the country, bringing out brochures and publications to boost the international image of Indian cinema.

The nomination of Aishwarya Rai on the Cannes Festival Jury has created an India focus in the Cannes Market this year. Apart from this an NFDC co-production titled 'A Story That Begins at the End' directed by Murali Nair has been selected to be part of the 'Un Certain Regard' section. CII plans to organize an India Evening, which is to be co-hosted by the Indian Ambassador to France. The CIII delegation to Cannes has eminent filmmakers like Ramgopal Verma and Shekhar Kapoor among others.

The Minister of Information & Broadcasting is also visiting London as a follow up to the visit of Ms. Tessa Jowell, the British Minister for Culture, Sports and Media who visited India earlier this year. The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting has been making concerted efforts to create more opportunities for international co-operation and technical/financial partnerships between Indian and foreign cinema professionals. FICCI is organizing a meeting in London of film producers and media professionals with whom the Minister would interact to increase opportunities for networking and business promotion.

The Minister would use this opportunity to visit British institutions relevant to the Film and Broadcasting industry and assess the possibilities for synergy in their working with Indian institutions. OFCOM, which is the body set up in UK to regulate various segments of the media industry, is one of the organizations the Minister will visit to better understand the role of the primary regulatory authority in the post-convergence environment. A visit to the British Film Council, and a meeting with senior management of BBC is also planned.
