Bhilai Steel for Naval Warships
New Delhi: May 13, 2003

Bhilai Steel Plant(BSP) , in collaboration with the Defence Mettallurgical Research Laboratory, Hyderabad, has developed a special grade steel for the country's naval warships. India was importing this steel till now to meet its requirements. This achievement has encouraged the plant to venture into the area of producing very specialized plates for defence applications. This will not only reduce India's dependence on other countries for specialized steel requirements but also provide the scope for exports of such special grades to other countries.

The special steel for naval warships and its rolling into plates was made at BSP in presence of defence experts. The steel was tested for tensile strength, bending, impact testing, inclusion rating and ferretic grain size determination. All the tests were more than satisfactory.

Bhilai Plate Mill is armed with ISO:9002 certification for its quality management system and ISO:14001 for its environment management system. BSP plates are exported to the Middle East, Philippines, Japan, China, Europe and other countries.
