Mumbai Urban Transport Project Phase II
New Delhi: June 16, 2003

The Ministry of Railways has identified eleven projects for inclusion in Mumbai Urban Transport Project Phase II (MUTP) at an estimated cost of Rs. 3502 crores.

In this connection, Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation has been advised to obtain the consent of the Government of Maharashtra for sharing 50 per cent of the cost of MUTP Phase II.

It is planned to pose the projects for funding by World Bank through the Ministry of Finance as soon as the consent of the Government of Maharashtra for 50 per cent cost sharing is received.

The projects included in MUTP Phase II are : Kurla-Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminal fifth and sixth lines, Mumbai Central-Santa Cruz-Borivali sixth line, Bandra-Kurla (East West Link), Diva-Kalyan (Additional Pair of Lines), Diva-Thane (Additional Pair of Lines), Extension of Harbour Line from Thane to Andheri to Goregaon, DC to AC conversion from Thane to Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminal, Signalling and Telecom upgradation on local lines to improve headway, Electrical Multiple Unit (EMU) maintenance facilities, stabling lines for EMUs and EMU procurement, manufacture and retrofitment.

The estimated cost of the ongoing MUTP Phase I Projects relating to rail component is Rs. 3125 crores. The cost is shared equally between the Ministry of Railways and the Government of Maharashtra.

The MUTP Phase I is being funded by World Bank through a loan from International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) of US dollar 463 million including US dollar 305 million for rail component and a credit from International Development Association (IDA) of US dollar 79 million including US dollar 60 million for rail component.

The loan for MUTP has become effective on November 6, 2002.
