Allegation against Jagmohan regarding Ayodhya digging is unwarranted
New Delhi, 18th June, 2003

It has been reported in a section of the press that Union Minister for Tourism and Culture, Shri Jagmohan, is forcing Archaeological Survey of India to dig up evidence at Ayodhya. This statement has been attributed to Shri Irfan Habib and Shri Suraj Bhan. If any such statement has been made by them, it is unwarranted as well as irresponsible. In fact, it constitutes a contempt of court, as the Allahabad High Court had prohibited all concerned from making comments in regard to pending issues before it.

The matter is between the Allahabad High Court and the team of ASI which is working at the site under the Court's directions and in accordance with the principles and procedure approved by it. The team is reporting directly to the High Court and carrying on its work in the presence of the representatives of the parties concerned to the case.
