Readers Comments: Maharana Pratap Coins
June 4, 2003

Government-advertisements for function to be held for release of commemorative coins in memory of Maharana Pratap have appeared in newspapers. But are new commemorative coins issued only for select VVIPs invited at such functions? Despite repeated demands to systemize release of new coins and their sets, Indian Government Mint and Union Finance Ministry have not cared to issue/ sell new coins/ coin-sets from convenient centers at face value right from date of release.

Anti-public practice to circulate new coin-sets through cumbersome and expensive booking-procedure that too after several years of actual release kills very purpose of commemorating the occasion through release of new coins. There should be just one type of coin-set with coins of all denominations issued on the occasion. Coin-sets must be sold through all philatical counters and RBI offices apart from selected bank-branches right from the date of issue to save coin-collectors from botheration and expenses of booking. For unaffording collectors, special higher-priced silver-alloy coins should be put on sale at face value together with coins of normally circulated denominations. Encouraging coin-collection will be advantageous to exchequer also because coin-sets and special high-priced silver-alloy coins are net source of revenue-earning because these never come in actual circulation. Apart from one silver-alloy coin, all other coins should be in normally circulated denominations abolishing coins in denominations like Rs 20, 50 etc.
