Safety Drive on Railways
New Delhi: July 7, 2003

The Railways have launched a month long safety drive. This follows a direction from the Chairman Railway Board, Shri R.K. Singh, to all the General Managers of Zonal Railways asking them to involve officers, supervisors and cutting edge staff to focus on safe operation of trains and maintenance of fixed and mobile assets.

Closer monitoring of drivers and effectiveness of brake power are the central action points of the safety drive.

Meanwhile, the Union Minister of Railways, Shri Nitish Kumar has convened a two-day national workshop on railway safety on July 11 and 12, 2003 here. The workshop will involve a cross section of ground staff like station masters, drivers, gangmen, pointmen, loco inspectors, signalling inspectors and workshop staff at the cutting edge of rail safety.

The workshop will deliberate on ways and means to contain and reduce train accidents involving causalities. Besides, it will deliberate on infrastructure maintenance, operation practices, rescue and relief systems, training and upgradation of skills and other internal and external factors affecting rail safety.
