Shri Arun Jaitley releases Law Books
New Delhi: July 29, 2003

Minister for Law & Justice and Commerce & Industry, Shri Arun Jaitley, today released four publications brought out by the Legislative Department of the Ministry of Law & Justice. Releasing the publications, Shri Jaitley complimented the Legislative Department and said that these publications would prove highly useful to the judges, lawyers and legal community at large. Earlier, Dr. S. C. Jain, Secretary, Legislative Department, Ministry of Law & Justice gave a brief background of each of the publications. The Minister of State, Shri P. C. Thomas, and senior officers of the Ministry of Law & Justice were present on the occasion. The publications released include "English-Hindi/Hindi-English Legal Glossary", "Orders Issued Under the Constitution of India" in two volumes, "Index of Statutory Definitions" and " The Constitution of India". The Legislative Department prepares all Government Bills and also brings out publications of the Constitution of India, Central Acts and other allied publications.

The diglot edition of the Constitution of India (Pocket Size) is widely used by lawyers, judges, civil servants and others. Publications released by Shri Jaitley included the revised edition of the Constitution of India which contains all the Constitutional amendments upto the Constitution (Eighty-Sixth Amendment) Act, 2002.

Another publication, namely, "Orders issued under the Constitution of India" was first published in 1955. The last edition of this publication was brought out in 1988. Part I contains, inter alia, the Constitution (Application to Jammu and Kashmir) Orders, the Distribution of Revenue Orders and the Constitution (Removal of Difficulties) Orders, etc. Part II consists of the Adaptation of Orders issued under the Constitution and the Acts relating to territorial adjustments and formation of new States.

"Index to Statutory Definitions" was last published in 1981. Since the last edition, 340 legislations have been enacted. The new compilation includes words and expressions which are defined in the Central Acts and ordinances whether repealed or unrepealed.

Part I of the "Legal Glossary" (Sixth Edition ) contains Hindi equivalent of English words which are used in the Central enactments. Part II contains Hindi equivalent of Latin phrases often used in legislation. The terms relating to customs and excise and their Hindi equivalents find place in Part VI of this publication. A list of Central Acts arranged alphabetically has also been included in Part VIII.
