Improving external crash worthiness of Rail Coaches
New Delhi: August 6, 2003

Rail India Technical and Economic Services Ltd (RITES) has been asked by the Ministry of Railways to carry out measures for improving the external crash worthiness of rail coaches through an international expert of repute. The exercise is intended to improve crash worthy design for general second class and guard-cum-luggage-cum-second class type coaches.

RITES has also been directed to help in developing in-house expertise at Research Designs and Standards Organization (RDSD) as part of the project to make other types of coaches also crash worthy in due course.

Redesigned coaches will have bodies to absorb most of the impact in case of an accident in non-passenger carrying areas, thereby saving precious human life even in the worst disaster.
