Action against guilty officials for negligence of cleanliness
New Delhi: August 14, 2003

The complaints regarding cleanliness and sanitation at stations and in passenger trains are investigated and corrective action taken against the defaulter staff found negligent. The details of specific action taken are not separately maintained for this activity.

Various actions taken to improve sanitation on Railway stations and in trains include strengthening of monitoring and supervision, introduction of Pay and Use Scheme of toilets, emphasis on mechanized cleaning processes, provision of washable aprons and additional dustbins, regular removal of garbage, spraying of insecticides, repairs of drains, monthly intensive cleaning of coaches, use of high pressure jet cleaning plants at coaching depots and mobile jet cleaning machines at stations enroute, use of improved and eco-friendly cleaning agents, use of various media to educate the passengers and seeking their co-operation to keep Railway areas and trains clean and developing identified stations as 'Clean Train Stations' to provide effective enroute cleaning of long distance trains.

This information was given by the Minister of State for Railways Shri Bandaru Dattatraya in a written reply to a question from Shrimati Rajkumari Ratna Singh and Shri Ram Tahal Chaudhary in the Lok Sabha today.
