Progress of Monsoon
New Delhi: August 4, 2003

The progress of South-West monsoon during the week ending 30th of last month was satisfactory. Out of the 36 met sub-divisions, 4 sub-divisions, namely Jammu and Kashmir, north interior Karnataka, Kerala and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands were in the deficient category while the remaining sub-divisions received excess or normal rainfall.

The situation in Karnataka has improved with many districts of south interior Karnataka receiving normal rainfall. Only north interior Karnataka remains in the deficient category and it is likely that drought-like conditions may continue to prevail in certain districts. The levels of deficit have marginal agricultural implications for other deficient met sub-Divisions.

According to the drought situation report of the Agricultural Ministry for the week ending the first of this month, Gujarat, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are continuing regular relief operations on a systematic basis, though on a declining scale. States like Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh have terminated such operations.

With good rains in several parts of Gujarat and Rajasthan, only 150 wagons were deployed by Railways for transportation of water during the week ending 30th of last month. The number of wagons deployed during the preceding week was 200.
