Readers Comments: Continous Holidays
April 15, 2003

Too many continuous government holidays cause great difficulty and national loss. There should be a system that all offices of government (Union and States) and their undertakings may remain open on all working days of the year except two national holidays of Independence Day and Republic Day. Government employees may be asked to opt for specified number of holidays from the list of occasions in advance for the coming year. An example of government offices working on even the day of colourful Holi in the year 2003 was found successful when government offices were ‘wrongly’ kept working on the day of celebration and instead closed on the next day described by general public as Sarkari Holi.

To respect true ideals of great persons including Mahatma Gandhi and Bhimrao Ambedkar, holidays on birthdays of big leaders including 2nd October and 14th April should be abolished rather making these days ‘extra work-days’ by extending working hours on these days by one hour.

British legacy of long court vacations in summer and winter must be abolished. Such vacations were designed by Britishers to save British judges in slave India from severe hot weather and to facilitate them to visit their home-land by time-consuming sea-journeys in those days. It is anti-public and senseless to pay judges without work for long court-breaks especially when pending court cases are mounting up!
