New scheme for Solid Waste Management and Drainage in selected IAF Airfield Towns
New Delhi: April 1, 2003

Bird hits are among the major causes of air crashes in our country leading to the loss of costly Defence Aircraft and loss of invaluable lives of Pilots. An Inter-Ministerial Joint Sub-Committee constituted by the Ministry of Defence recommended to provide proper sanitation facilities including Solid Waste Management and Drainage to over come the bird menace in ten selected towns having airfields of Indian Air Force. The towns are Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh), Sirsa and Ambala (Haryana), Hindon and Bareilly (Uttar Pradesh), Jodhpur (Rajasthan), Tezpur (Assam), Adampur (Punjab), Pune (Maharashtra) and Dundigal (A.P.).

According to the Annual Report of the Ministry of Urban Development & Poverty Alleviation for the year 2002-03, the scheme has been approved at a cost of Rs. 9934.56 lakh and would be launched after it is approved by the Planning Commission.
