Centre releases Rs. 119 crore for fast track courts
New Delhi - September 16, 2002

The Centre has released the next installment of Rs. 119 crore for setting up and running of Fast Track Courts to the 16 States. With this the total amount released to the States so far is Rs. 308 crore. It may be recalled that Fast Track Courts were started in July 2000 with a total grand of Rs. 502.90 crore sanctioned by the Eleventh Finance Commission for a period of five years 2000- 2005.

Setting up of Fast Track Courts involves construction of court rooms. It has to be necessarily a phased process. The States have so far notified 1150 Fast Track Courts which have disposed of more than 60,000 cases out of 150,000 cases referred to them. Heinous offences and cases involving under trials having been in jails for a long time are being disposed of by Fast Track Courts on priority of day to day hearing. About 205,000 under trials are languishing in jails all over the country.

The Centre is considering introduction of an incentive scheme for rewarding the States wherein Fast Track Courts are giving higher disposal of cases. A Committee of Law Secretaries of some States and Registrar Generals of High Courts is working out the scheme. The Committee held its second meeting on September 13 under the Chairmanship of Additional Secretary (Justice) Shri Surendra Nath.
