Ms. Sonia Gandhi distributes cheques to families of dead farmers
All India Congress Party President Ms. Sonia Gandhi visited Anantapur and met the family members of the farmers who committed suicide. She later addressed a gathering where she criticized the BJP and TDP Governments for their Ani-Farmer policies. She distributed cheques of Rs. 22,222 to each family out of the Rs. 25 lakhs fund being collected by the Congress. CLP Leader Dr. YS Rajasekhar Reddy said that TDP is playing a 'political gimmick' and failed to provide the long term needs of the people.

Two farmers committed suicide in Anantapur district due to financial problems that arose after their cotton crop failed. A ex-gratia of Rs. 10,000 was given to their family members. The Congress and the Left Parties has postponed their Bundh program scheduled for Feb 28 to Mar 5 due to entrance exams to students.

Congress and Left parties succeeded in the Rastha Rokho program which blocked Road traffic to Anantapur for over 40 hours. Police restored to lathi charge and arrested leaders of the parties. Business and Banking system were also effected with many shops and establishments in the area remaining closed.

Road Traffic to Anantapur blocked
Road Traffic on Anantapur was blocked following agitation by Congress and other Left parties protesting against the Government for not coming to the rescue of the Anantapur farmer, many of whom have committed suicide having no other alternative to their mounting depts. Congress Leaders, Left Party leaders and Farmer Association members began blockade of National Highway at Anantapur. All APSRTC Busses and those run by private operators were off-road causing inconvenience to commuters. The blocade began at 6:00 AM and will continue for 40 hours.

The 11th Convocation of the Sri Krishna Devaraya University was held today. Governor of Andhra Pradesh and Chancellor of the University Sri Rangarajan took part in the convocation. He presented gold medals to 70 merit students. Sri Prem Chand was given the honorable Doctorate.
