Soon! Hi-tech screening system to 'smell' air passengers for explosives

June 8, 2011 - London

A simulation of a hi-tech screening system that 'smells' air passengers for traces of explosives has been unveiled in Singapore.

The three-channel passenger screening system first filters passengers according to risk and then scans and 'sniffs' them for explosives as they walk through the check line.

The discovery promises to drastically cut the long queues at airport security checks.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) showed the mock-up model of the future airport screening system at an annual meeting of airline chiefs in Singapore.

"It's the future we envision about five to seven years from now," the Daily Mail quoted Ken Dunlap, IATA's global director for security and travel facilitation, as saying.
