Now, feel the swerve in your seat round a bend in a virtual car race!

June 11, 2011 - London

A team of scientists headed by Ivan Poupyrev from Disney Research, Pittsburgh has developed a haptic chair which will make the user swerve while changing directions in a virtual car race.

They kitted up a regular chair with soft pads filled with a grid of actuators for creating a tactile feedback, which synchronises with the visuals and sound in the game, reports New Scientist.

The system called 'Surround Haptics' generates smooth strokes through a tactile illusion. Since the functioning involves a brain trick, when two vibrating actuators are placed on the skin at a distance from each other, a single pulse is felt in between.

The scientists believe that the system could find application in amusement park rides or immersive cinema experiences where the sensations would be felt anywhere on the body.
