Potatoes dont count as daily fruit and vegetables

A new report has warned that having starchy chips, roast potatoes do not count towards your daily intake of five portions of fruit and vegetables.

London, Jan 31 : A new report has warned that having starchy chips, roast potatoes do not count towards your daily intake of five portions of fruit and vegetables.

The warning comes following a survey, which revealed that Britons eat starchy chips, roast potatoes and mash to make up for their five portions of fruit and vegetables a day, reports the Telegraph.

The survey, conducted by the Health Food Manufacturers' Association (HFMA), has estimated that two thirds of Britons (38 million people) still consume potatoes to add to their daily fruit and vegetables, at the expense of healthy greens.

For the study, 3,300 people were surveyed and over two thirds of those admitted that they were puzzled by recommendation on health and nutrition, saying that conflicting messages make them ignore many guidelines.

The statistics of the study also reflect FSA research, which found, on average, only 14 per cent of Britons consume the recommended five portions or fruit and vegetables every day.
