WHO to give Bihari TB patients smart pillboxes for dose reminder

In a move by World Health Organisation (WHO) to keep a watch on TB patients to take their antibiotics regularly, a smart pillbox namely the uBox will be given to 100 TB patients in Bihar this year.

London, Feb 5 : In a move by World Health Organisation (WHO) to keep a watch on TB patients to take their antibiotics regularly, a smart pillbox namely the "uBox" will be given to 100 TB patients in Bihar this year.

This novel pillbox, created by Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will also identify those patients who have missed their dose, reports New Scientist.

The WHO advocates such monitoring as when the course of antibiotics is not completed, it leads to multi-drug resistant TB strains.

With the number of cases each year reaching 9 million, the WHO health workers need to spot the patients prone to such lapses so that efforts are focused where most needed.

When the uBox lid is opened, a memory chip makes a record of the same while a timed buzzer and flashing LEDs remind patients to take their pills.

When the antibiotics course ends, the researchers download the data from the boxes to identify backsliders.
