Children who do not get adequate sleep are likely to sustain more injuries, according to a new study.
Washington, Feb 22 : Children who do not get adequate sleep are likely to sustain more injuries, according to a new study.
The researchers from University of Rochester School of Nursing conducted a survey involving nearly 300 mothers and their preschool children over the course of two-and-a-half years.
The study led by Christina Koulouglioti, Ph.D., R.N. from the University of Rochester School of Nursing found a direct negative relationship between children's sleep and injuries.
The findings revealed that the average number of injuries during the preschool years was two times higher for children who don't get enough sleep each day as described by their mothers and those getting an adequate of sleep sustained fewer injuries.
"The results of our study have significant implications for the prevention of injuries," said Koulouglioti.
"The findings provide additional support for the essential role of poor sleep as a risk factor for injuries among preschool children," she added.
This study is published in Public Health Nursing.
