The first aircraft to use only a hydrogen battery for power in the air has successfully completed a test flight in Ocana, central Spain.
London, April 4 : The first aircraft to use only a hydrogen battery for power in the air has successfully completed a test flight in Ocana, central Spain.
The aircraft, which is capable of carrying two people and has a wingspan of 16 meters (52ft), flew at 100km/h (62mph) for 20 minutes.
Hydrogen power involves fuel cells using the energy produced from the transformation of hydrogen and oxygen into water.
According to the US company Boeing, hydrogen provides a cleaner and renewable energy resource because it produces only water vapour as waste.
Hydrogen batteries could become the main source of energy for small aircraft, according to Francisco Escartl, the director of the Boeing research centre at Ocana.
"The company will continue to explore their potential as well as that of all durable sources of energy that boost environmental performance," said Escartl, adding that the test plane had the advantage of "not making any noise".
Boeing described the successful test flight of the hydrogen battery powered aircraft as "a historical technological success for Boeing and full of promises for a greener future".
