Electric ships might be a reality soon

Electric ships that offer a cleaner, faster and simpler alternative to diesel-powered craft might be a reality soon.

London, June 19 : Electric ships that offer a cleaner, faster and simpler alternative to diesel-powered craft might be a reality soon.

Researchers at German engineering giant Siemens have designed a motor that uses high-temperature superconductors, which needs to be cooled at only about -140°C.

Till now, the only problem with the development of an electric ship was that superconductor motors operate only at temperatures close to absolute zero (-275°C) and the heat generated is difficult to dissipate inside a ship.

Now, scientists at Siemens have got around this problem by placing the motor inside a pod that sits directly beneath the ship, so it is almost completely surrounded by seawater.

According to New Scientist, this allows heat to dissipate far more efficiently, keeping the motor at the required temperature.
