London, June 11 : Open-plan offices while having socially, collaborative environments, often become noisy, filled by a cacophony of workers' chatter. But help is now at hand, what with researchers at Cambridge Sound Management of Massachusetts having developed software that promises to turn volumes down.
Called the Open Office Privacy Calculator, the software lets architects plan an office's acoustics by calculating how the materials used to construct an office, as well as structural factors such as desk partitions and ceiling height, affect how sound travels.
According to the scientists, each company can set a desired volume for its offices, depending on whether it wants to embrace loud-mouthed colleagues or muffle them.
According to the New Scientist magazine, the software also suggests which design tweaks and how noise cancellation systems can best achieve it.
