Archeologists have discovered artifacts dating from the 13th to the 15th century during excavations in Sharjah, UAE, which suggest that the city of Khorfakkan had been an important economic centre at that time.

Abu Dhabi, Dec 27 : Archeologists have discovered artifacts dating from the 13th to the 15th century during excavations in Sharjah, UAE, which suggest that the city of Khorfakkan had been an important economic centre at that time.

The findings were made by two archaeological teams from the Kanazawa University in Japan and Bryn Mawr College in suburban Philadelphia in the US.

The artifacts include pottery items from the Arabian Peninsula and Eastern Asia, particularly China, Thailand and Burma.

This indicates that Khorfakan, where the discoveries have been made, had been an important economic centre that played a significant role in world trade at the time.

While the Japanese team is working on an archaeological site in Khorfakan, which goes back to the early time of Islam, the American team is working in the Muweilah site near the American University in Sharjah.

The team had already excavated in the last few years an archaeological site traced back to the Iron Age, where they discovered houses, administration buildings and a wide wall.
