Godavari Pushkarams – 23 pilgrims die in a stampede on the first day - updates

In a stampede that took place at Kotagummam Pushkar Ghat for having a holy dip in River Godavari on the eve of Godavari Pushkarams, three women died on the first day of the Pushkarams. Five of the devotees were injured. One of the injured who were in serious condition were rushed to nearby hospital. The medical teams posted there administered first aid and shifted the injured to hospitals.

Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister N Chinnarajappa are personally supervising the arrangements. Chandrababu Naidu expressed his condolences over the incident and directed the police to control and divert the devotees to various ghats instead of congregating at one ghat.

Latest information reaching said that the death tool has risen to fifteen and another ten pilgrims are being treated at Rajahmundry Government Hospital. Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu is supervising the arrangements from the Control Room. Chief Minister ordered for extending improved medical aid to the injured.

Government fails in crowd management:
The State Government though made elaborate arrangements for the smooth conduct of the Godavari Pushkarams, the failure of the government in crowd management is visibly seen.

Death toll rises to 17: With the latest available information, the death toll has risen to 17 and as many as 14 were injured. Majority of the victims are said to be from Uttarandhra and the identification of the deceased to be done as the relatives have scattered to various places in the stampede. The death toll may likely to rise, said sources.

Death toll rises to 23:
In the stampede that took place on the first day of Godavari Pushkarams, the death toll rises by hour by hour with the latest reports say that 23 persons have lost their lives. Another 20 persons were injured and were undergoing treatment. Minister for Health Dr. Kamineni Srinivas called on the victims undergoing treatment at hospital.

Chief Minister announces Rs.10 lakh ex-gratia
The State Government has announced an ex-gratia of Rs.10 lakh to each of the kith and kin of the deceased in the stampede. A probe has been ordered on the incident. He said that action will be taken on those responsible after completion of the Pushkarams, said the Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu. He said that directions have been issued not to recur such incidents.

Prime Minister calls on Chandrababu over phone:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi telephone Chandrababu Naidu and expressed condolences and grief on the incident in which 23 persons were killed. He expressed speedy recovery of those undergoing treatment in hospital.

YSRCP president and leader of the Opposition YS Jagan Mohan Reddy expressed deep shock over the incident. He will be heading to Rajahmundry to console and call on the victims and their families.

What leaders say: What answer Naidu say to the public? YS Jagan Mohan Reddy after calling the victims undergoing treatment at government hospital speaking to media said that Chandrababu Naidu instead of going to VVIP ghat had gone to ordinary ghat for the sake of publicity that led to the stampede. With this reason, the devotees were held up for over two and hours resulting in stampede. Taking moral responsibility on the incident, Jagan demanded Chandrababu Naidu to resign from the post, he said. What answer he says to the public when he said that all arrangements were made for the conduct of pushkarms?

Congress Party president Sonia Gandhi and Vice-President Rahul Gandhi expressed deep shock and expressed condolences over the incident.

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhara Rao expressed his grief shock over the incident in which many pilgrims were dead. He termed it as the most unfortunate one.

Congress Rajya Sabha Member K Chiranjeevi expressing deep shock over the incident said that the State Government has to take responsibility for the incident. He alleged that the Chandrababu Naidu has given much publicity for the Pushkarams and not taken sufficient measures for the safety and security of the visiting pilgrims. The incident is the result of the failure of Chandrababu Naidu pushkar management.

Congress former MLA Gandra Venkata Ramana Reddy wanted to slap criminal cases against Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu holding responsible for the death of the pilgrims. He said that due to poor facilities provided at pushkaram venues, increment people have lost their lives, he said.

YSRCP leader Gurunath Reddy demanded Chandrababu Naidu to immediately resign from the post taking moral responsibility over the incident. He reminded that when YSR was the Chief Minster way back in 2004 pushkarms in which five pilgrims were dead, Chandrababu demanded his resignation and the same is applicable to him in the present incident, he added. YSRCP spokesperson Ambati too demanded and wanted Chandrababu to hold responsibility
