Court convicted 10 accused in Kumbakonam school case

The District and Sessions Court in Thanjavur on Wednesday convicted 10 accused in Kumbakonam school fire incident case in which 94 students were charred to death and 18 others seriously injured on July 14, 2004.
The court while acquitting 11 out of 21 and the convicted included the school founder Palanisamy, his wife Saraswati, adopted daughter Santhalakshmi and four of the education department.
The Principal District and Sessions Judge Mohamed Ali delivered the judgement. The court examined 501 witnesses, 230 were examined during the trial that included the survived children and parents of 94 children who lost lives.
It may be recalled here that a fire broke out on July 14, 2004 in kitchen of Sri Krishna Middle School. The flames ran to the first floor that housed 200 students with a thatched roof. Police had registered a case under various IPC sections 304 read with 120-B and 338 Section 23 of the Juvenile Justice Act, 46 and 47 of the Tamil Nadu Recognized Private Schools (Regulation) Act, 1973 and section 320 of the Tamil Nadu District Municipalities Act were also slapped on the accused.
