Urban local body polls conclude peacefully barring minor incidents

  • The municipal and municipal corporation polling in the state went peacefully, barring minor incidents.
  • Over 70 per cent polling was recorded on Sunday. 146 municipalities and 10 municipal corporations went into polls.
  • The voter turnout was encouraging as even 75 to 80 per cent was witnessed at some places. The final figures will be revealed by State Election Commission later in the day.
  • Polling began early at 7 am and continued till 5 pm in both Telangana and Seemandhra regions. In some places which were hit by technical problems, polling was allowed even after 5 pm.
  • As many as 17,864 contestants are in the fray for 3990 wards in 146 municipalities. Another 3343 candidates are contesting for 2507 divisions in 10 municipal corporations.
  • Re-polling in seven booths is likely to be held.
  • Andhra Pradesh Special Police and central paramilitary forces were deployed to ensure the smooth conduct of the polls. 53,370 policemen from 16 companies of central paramilitary forces and 130 battalions of Andhra Pradesh Special police were used today at polling booths across the state.
  • Though, the results of the polling is scheduled to be released on April 2, the state high court will pronounced its order on a petition seeking direction to election commission to announce results only after May 7.
  • The congress government in the State has been delaying municipal polls since October 20. Earlier in the month, the high court which took serious note of the delay has directed the election commission to hold the polls.
  • State Election Commissioner P Ramakanth Reddy In the last few days, 25,000 poll related and 21,000 excise related cases were booked and Rs 59 crore of unnacounted cash was seized by the police. 7488 persons were arrested in liquor cases.
