TDP breaks three-decade old tradition of fielding Muslims in Guntur East constituency
April 18, 2014 - Guntur
For the first time in 32 years, Telugu Desam Party has fielded a non Muslim candidate for Guntur East Assembly constituency. The party has a tradition of fielding Muslim candidates since its inception in 1982. TDP on Friday has nominated businessman M Giridhar Rao as its candidate for Guntur East Assembly constituency. The party did not field even a single Muslim candidates at any of the 123 Assembly and 17 Lok Sabha Constituencies in the current general elections.
It may be recalled that TDP founder NT Rama Rao started the tradition of fielding a Muslim leader Pathan Umar Khan to make Guntur East segment a fortress of minorities. However, the betrayal of Umar Khan who revolted the party in 1984 and joined Nadendla Bhaskara Rao could not alter the tradition of fielding Muslim as the party nominated Syed Sahib.
