High court directs Superintendent of Police to give protection to all ZPTC members of Nellore
July 18, 2014 - Hyderabad
Following a petition filed by some of the ZPTC members seeking police protection in Nellore ZP chairman election slated on July 20, the High Court has directed the Superintendent of Police to give protection to all the ZPTC till the election is over on July 20.
The High Court said in its order that the protection should be in the personal supervision of the Superintendent of Police. The court also directed the police that no arrests should be made prior to the election. The courted asked the ZPTCs to be seated in their respective seats and those who violate will forego their voting rights. These directions from the Court came following a petition filed by Ponnavolu Sudhakar Reddy.
It may be recalled that the ZPTC members of YSRCP led by B Anil Kumar Reddy along with 22 others moved to High Court seeking appointment of a judicial officer as an observer to oversee the election process. They also sought a direction to the Election Commission to make arrangements for appointing a special observer for the polls. They alleged Telugu Desam members would again resort to “misuse of official machinery and prevent them from casting their vote in the elections. They alleged that the ruling party has earlier played ‘tactics’ in postponement of these elections twice.
