High Court dismisses petition seeking postponement of counting of votes for Municipal Elections
April 1, 2014 - Hyderabad
The Andhra Pradesh High Court on Tuesday while dismissing the plea seeking postponement of counting of votes polled for Municipal elections held on Sunday.
The Court directed the State Election Commission to take up the counting of votes on April 9 and complete the election process before April 10 as was directed by the court earlier. It may be noted that the State Election Commission has scheduled to take up the counting of votes on April 2 but had to go ahead with counting but with the latest directions from the Court gives a week's time for taking up counting.
The court dismissed the arguments of the petitioner who told to the court that the results would influence the voters for Assembly and Parliament elections. The State Election Commission too expressed its readiness for taking up of counting and expressed the difficulty of keeping guard of the ballot boxes if extension is given. With the judgment giving a weeks' time will give a chance to the petitioner to move to apex court for a direction challenging the High Court verdict.
It may be recalled that the State Election Commission could complete the election process for 146 municipalities and 10 municipal corporations on Sunday and the six that warranted re-polling on Tuesday.
