AP High Court directs Election Commission to allot symbol for NOTA

The Andhra Pradesh High Court on Monday directed the Election Commission of India to allot a symbol to the 'None of the Above' (NOTA) option.

It may be recalled that the option of 'None of the Above' was introduced for the first time by the Election Commission for voters who want toe exercise their voting right even though they do not like any of the existing candidates in the fray.

A Division Bench comprising of Chief Justice Kalyan Jyothi Sengupta and Justice PV Sanjay Kumar while dealing with a petition filed by social activist P Sauda who brought to the notice of the Court. The Courted wanted the Election Commission to give wider publicity for the option in the ensuing elections. The letters NOTA are written in English on the ballot paper and illiterate voters may not recognize this. Justice Sengupta agreeing with the contention of the petitioner wondered as to how the authorities presumed that our villagers would understand this English option. He wanted the NOTA option be give a decent symbol and if possible Telugu language has to be used. The CJ said that how the people will know of the existence of such an option in the absence of a publicity campaign to educate the people about this, he said.
