May 8, 2014 - Hyderabad
Speaking at a media conference on Thursday, Dr Jayaprakash Narayana said that it is time to break the vicious cycle and protect democracy. He said that all the political parties made irresponsible promises by ignoring their primary responsibility of providing quality education, health care and basic infrastructure to the people and instead focussed on distribution of inducements such as money, liquor, saris and other gifts.
Since elections are over, Dr Jayaprakash Narayana appealed to all parties in the country to work for replacement of the present electoral system by proportional representation to protect democracy from collapsing.
Suggests direct election to the Chief Minister
The Lok Satta national president suggested direct election of the State Chief Minister as a corollary reform. He said that political parties in Telangana announced loan waiver plan but could not give a comprehensive plan on who they proposed to provide basic amenities in Hyderabad with Rs.13,0000 crore annual income, employment generation and tackle power crises. In Seemandhra, it is even worse with an estimated deficit of RS.12,000 crore and it may even slip into deeper crisis.
'Politics is not to decide who would be the Chief Minister or Prime minister but to determine the future of the society, said Jayaprakash Narayan.
