'Centre directs UGC and AICTE to frame guidelines', announces Union HRD Minister

The Central Government has directed the University Grants Commission (UGC) and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to frame guidelines and rules on the safety and security of the students when they are on tours. This direction came in the back drop of the Beas river tragedy that took the lives of 24 engineering students from VNR Vignan Jyothi College of Engineering and Technology, Hyderabad. Union Minister for Human Resources Development Smurti Irani announced the same in Lok Sabha.
Speaking in Lok Sabha, the Union Minister said that the Centre has acted immediately after hearing the news and summoned the services of Indo-Tibetan Border Police, Sashastra Seema Bal, National Disaster Response Force, divers and rescue teams from Navy and Army in the rescue and relief operations.
The Union HRD Minister said that the both Andhra Pradesh Government and Telangana State Government too promptly acted on the incident by deputing their ministers and official machinery to oversee the operations. She said that out of the 24 students who went on missing on June 8 and the rescue teams could not trace three bodies of the students.
