Anti-defection law may apply to Nandyal MP SPY Reddy

May 25, 2014 - Hyderabad

The Chief Election Commissioner VS Sampath clarified that the anti-defection law applies if a candidate wins an election on one party symbol and later switches over to other party irrespective of whether the political party is recognised or not. VS Sampath said that under 10th Schedule of the Constitution clearly states in this direction.

In such a case, the defection of Nandyal MP SPY Reddy to Telugu Desam Party could attract disqualification under the anti-defection law.

The comments of Sampath gained importance at a time when there are rumors that several YSRCP elected representatives are contemplating shifting their loyalties to Telugu Desam Party. Nandyal MP SPY Reddy joined Telugu Desam Party on Sunday by quitting YSR Congress in which he got elected. For the disqualification, the YSR Congress party would have to move a petition to the Speaker for such action.
