After 41 years, the Andhra Pradesh State comes under President's rule after the Union Cabinet in its meeting on Friday decided to recommend. It may be recalled that the President rule was imposed in the State in 1973 during the period of PV Narasimha Rao due to Jai Andhra agitation.

The Union Cabinet that met at the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's residence has taken up the item 'proclamation under Article 356(1). The Union Cabinet move was necessitated following the Chief Minister Nallari Kiran Kumar Reddy who tendered resignation for the post in protest over the division of the State.

The move comes in the wake of the resignation of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister. With the imposition of President rule, Governor ESL Narasimhan will hold the charge during the period of President rule. It may be noted that the current 294 member Assembly comes to an end by June 2, 2014 and the Election Commission will shortly issue notification for Assembly polls.
