'Age of a person cannot determined on the basis of voter or ration card', says State Consumer Disputes Redressal

May 29, 2014 - Hyderabad

The Andhra Pradesh State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (APSCDRC) has directed the Reliance Insurance Co.Ltd., Guntur branch to pay Rs.3.75 lakh to the nominee of a policy holder.

One B Koti Ratnam, a resident of Guntur approached the District Consumer Forum when the Insurance company failed to pay the policy money after the demise of his father in May 2010. The insurance company pleaded that the age of the deceased did not match on his voter ID card and ration card. The District Forum ruled that the person's age cannot be authenticated from Voter ID or ration card and directed the insurance company to pay the amount and the company appealed to the State Forum. The State Forum upheld the district forum's ruling and dismissed the insurance company appeal.
