Suman Rathod surrenders, sent to judicial custody

January 11, 2013 - Hyderabad

Khanapur MLA Suman Rathod has surrendered herself before a court at Miyapur in Hyderabad on Friday. The MLA was sent to the Chanchalguda prison for women under judicial custody after she surrendered. The Telugu Desam Party MLA had been absconding since her name has cropped up in an investigation relating to a land deal. The KPHB police had booked a criminal case against her for land grabbing.

M Narasimha Rao had complained to the police that a doctor B Ratnakar has illegally occupied his plot of 400 square yards. The investigation by the police revealed that Ratnakar has bought the plot from D Ganesh and Venkat, who claimed to be the owners. The doctor claimed that the deal of sale was made at the MLA's quarter at Hyderabad. He claimed that he had paid Rs. 1 lakh and Rs. 45 lakh on two occasions to the MLA at her home and an additional amount of Rs. 1.35 crore to the duo.

The police has arrested three others involved in the case earlier. Mujahid Khan, an accused in the case, had admitted that the MLA was involved and had taken Rs. 40 lakh for the settlement deal.

Suman Rathod has made several attempts to get the case quashed and to get an anticipatory bail, but all her attempts went in vain. She also filed a special leave petition before the Supreme Court which on December 3, 2012 directed her to surrender in the lower court stating that the lower could should consider her petition for bail.

The police is now granted one day custody for questioning on Saturday.
