NIMS director Dr Dharma Rakshak puts his papers

To put an end to the tussle between the Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) and the State Government, its director Dr A Dharma Rakshak was made to step down on Saturday.

Dr Dharma Rakshak worked as NIMS head of cardiothoracic surgery department for nearly seven years before being elevated to the highest post in 2011 and his appointment was mired in controversy as it was reportedly done without following due procedure and he also faced allegations of financial irregularities in the purchase of infrastructure and construction of the new hospital block. Writ petitions were filed against him in the courts.

Sources said that Dr Rakshak who had a meeting with Ajay Sawhney, principal secretary Health in the director's chambers for half-an-hour and he had handed over his resignation letter which Sawhney readily accepted. Sawhney later took additional charge as the head of NIMS and a circular was sent to all the departments in this direction.
