Heavy rains in the State claims 12 lives leaves thousands homeless

Heavy rains that hit coastal districts of Andhra, Rayalaseema and Telangana claimed 12 lives so far leaving thousands of people homeless as on Friday and the toll may likely rise said officials.
Official sources said that the death toll rose to 17 with two people were still missing. Prakasam district accounted for five deaths followed by three from Guntur and Hyderabad. Over 67,000 people were evacuated from low-lying areas and moved to 135 relief camps in seven districts and thousands of people were stranded in marooned villages without food and drinking water. Over 3,000 houses were damaged in the rains, which inundated not only hundreds of villages in Srikakulam, Viziangaram, East Godavari, West Godavari, Prakasam, Guntur, Krishna, Nalgonda and Mahabubnagar districts but also low-lying areas in Hyderabad and in Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Guntur, Ongole and Eluru towns.
The Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy directed the district collectors to be on high alert and to launch rescue and relief operations.
