Eight killed as train runs over them near Vizianagaram
November 2, 2013 - Vijayanagaram
In a bizarre accident, at least eight people died and eight others were injured when they were run over by a speeding train at Gotlam village in Vizianagaram. The persons who died were travelling in Bokaro Express (Alappuzha-Dhanbad) and had pulled the chain on rumors that one of the compartments of the train in which they are travelling had caught fire. They did not notice the oncoming train as it was very dark.
According to CPRO, the Rayagada-Vijayawada passenger train train was coming from the opposite direction on the adjacent track. Railway Minister Mallikarjun Kharge termed the incident as most tragic and has ordered an inquiry. He also instructed the officials to ensure speedy recovery of the injured. Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy also expressed anguish over the accident and has spoke to Collector and SP over phone.
Vizianagaram district collector Kanthilal Dande rushed to the scene and is supervising the rescue and relief efforts. Speaking to media, he said that the accident could have happened as the passengers pulled off the chain and the train halted at a curve. The passengers who got down off the Bokaro express were not able to see the oncoming train due to the curve.
YSR Congress Party president Jagan Mohan Reddy expressed his condolences to the family members of the deceased. He called on his party workers to take up relief works on spot and called on youth to come forward for blood donations, if required, for the injured.
