Two school children die after school bus plunges into a canal


February 28, 2012 - East Godavari

Two school children died when a school bus plunged into a canal between Ganti and Pedapudi villages of East Godavari district in the evening.

The bus which belongs to Sai Teja Public School and an Intermediate College in P Gannavaram village jointly was carrying 23 students when the accident happened. The driver tried to avoid hitting an oncoming autorickshaw when he lost control of the vehicle and it fell into the roadside canal. The local villagers who witnessed the accident sprung into action and tried to help the children. They were able to save 21 children.

The police took the driver of the school bus Nani and cleaner into custody and shifted him to P Gannavaram police station. Minister Thota Narsimham expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased. Speaking to media, he said that swimmers were searching for other bodes. Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy is aware of the accident and has given directions to the authorities, he said. Telugu Desam Party chief N Chandrababu Naidu also expressed sadness over the accident. He demanded the government to come to the aid of the families.

District Collector Neetu Kumari Prasad, SP Trivikram Varma and RDO P Sampath Kumar rushed to the spot immediately to supervise the rescue efforts.
