Chandrababu Naidu says there is no need to apologize

Goons of the Telugu Desam Party attacked members of Telangana Lawyers Joint Action Committee at Indira Park on Saturday afternoon, taking everybody by surprise and drawing widespread condemnation from political parties and people’s organizations. Nearly 20 lawyers from the Telangana JAC showed up with placards at the park, the venue of the TDP and Left protest against rising prices of essentials.

They raised slogans against the TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu and demanded that he explain his stand on statehood for Telangana. Chandrababu Naidu, at the time, was going hammer and tongs at the State and Central Governments on inflation, saying Prime Minister Man Mohan Singh and the Chief Minister, K Rosaiah had no moral right to continue in power. According to an eyewitness account, this was the juncture when Chandrababu Naidu’s trusted one Talasani Srinivas Yadav and Teegala Krishna Reddy instigated party men to attack the protesting lawyers. Confronted by 500 odd attackers, the 20 lawyers including some women, started retreating, keeping up with their sloganeering as they did so.

The TDP mob caught up with them and beat them mercilessly in the presence of Chandrababu Naidu, CPI State secretary K Narayana and his CPM counterpart BV Raghavulu. The brutality of the assault can be gauged from the fact that all the 20 lawyers were injured, four of them sustaining serious injuries. Late, the police quelled the mob and admitted the lawyers to a nearby private hospital. Meanwhile, the attack came under severe critism from leaders of the Telangana JAC, and Telangana leaders of the Congress and other organizations. TRS president K Chandrasekhara Rao, TJAC convener Prof.M Kodandaram, and MP P Prabhakar demanded an unconditional apology from Chandrababu Naidu. Chandrababu Naidu said there was no need to tender an apology as lawyers came to disrupt the meeting organized by the TDP and Left parties. Meanwhile, the Telangana Lawyers JAC has given a call for boycott of courts on March 8. Based on a complaint filed by some lawyers the Police have booked a case against Chandrababu Naidu.
