Union Territory status sought for North Andhra

Uttara Andhra Rakshana Vediaka project demand UT status if bifurcation is inevitable

The Uttara Andhra Rakshana Vedika has urged the Justice Srikrishna Committee to recommend for declaration of north Andhra region comprizing Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts as Union Territory if bifurcation of the State was inevitable. In the event of the committee favouring status quo, the forum wanted the three districts to be declared as backward and packages announced on the lines of the north eastern State for accelerated development. Pending these special measures, north Andhra would continue to be ill-treated whether the State was bifurcated or remained united.

In a power point presentation to the Srikrishna Committee members on Tuesday, the forum said due to the predominance of people from south Andhra and other regions, locals could not access proper education and this, in turn, affected their employment opportunities. Locals were not fielded form Visakhapatnam Lok Sabha seat and Payakaraopet Assembly constituency for the past couple of decades. The Forum Convenor S Siva Sankar said that the people of south Andhra region dominate industrial development as they had the benefit of irrigation which enabled them to invest in education as well as economic activities like entertainment, media, IT and real estate.

D Ravindra Naik, former MP who led a delegation of Lambadas wanted the committee to recommend commencement of the process for formation of separate Telangana. The Committee, he told to media persons later, was particular to know about the scope for intensification of Maoist activity. The Telangana Writers' Association warned the committee that people of Telangana would wage a war to achieve their goal of separate Statehood if the Centre failed to act on the recommendations made by Srikrishna committee in favour of separate State.
