Vijayawada MP Lagadapati Rajagopal arrested

Lagadapati is denied permission to stage hunger strike in Hyderabad

Vijayawada MP Lagadapati Rajagopal was arrested this morning by the police. The arrest is made as a preventive arrest as he gets ready to stage hunger strike. He was earlier denied permission to hold a hunger strike in Hyderabad. Situation turned tense in the airport and surrounding regions with huge contingent of policemen being deployed at Hyderabad airport. The arrest was made soon after he landed at the airport. Reports say he is moved to Shamshabad Airport and will be moved to undisclosed another police station in view of law and order.

Lagadapati has made his views clear about Telangana statehood recent and said he is against the division of the state. It is reported that Lagadapati is scheduled to meet the Chief Minister K Rosaiah and ask him to allow legislators to vote their views on the Telangana.

Meanwhile, bundh and protests have entered into the fourth day across coastal Andhra Pradesh. People in large numbers have come out their homes in Vijayawada protesting against the arrest of Lagadapati. Some key political leaders in Vijayawada region are believed to have been arrested.

Senior politicians in Vijayawada feel that Lagadapati would have allowed to air his views considering he has called for the protest to be held peacefully. However, leaders from Telangana feel that Lagadapati would have protested from his constituency and should not have chosen Hyderabad to be the location for his protest. Colleges in Eluru have been shut and students came to the streets raising slogans against his arrest. Students forced shopkeepers to shutdown in Bheemavaram.
