4 percent quota for Muslims

Hyderabad, July 4, 2007

The State Government which met under the chairmanship of the Chief Minister, Dr. YS Rajasekhara Reddy ratified the recommendations of the BC Commission that submitted its report to the State Government. The Cabinet accepted the four percent reservations to the Muslim Community in education and employment and proposes to bring about an Ordinance to give effect to the decision. The reservations will come into fore from the current year.

However, ten percent of the Muslim community have been put beyond the purview of the reservation. Nearly 85 percent of the 80 lakh Muslims in the State to gain. According to the report, Muslims will be considered as Group E in Backward Classes list according to the draft Ordinance which will be sent to the Governor for his consent.

Speaking to media, the Information Minister A Ramnarayana Reddy said that as courts have struck down the Government's previous efforts that reservations cannot be extended to a section of people based on religion, the Government has excluded some affluent sub castes from the purview of reservations.
