Meant to regulate multiplexes in major urban areas

Hyderabad, July 4, 2007

The State Government on Wednesday formally announced a set of rules to regulate construction of multiplexes in the major urban areas. The rules appear to be stringent and if adhered to would put an end to mushrooming of multiplexes in the Major cities. The State Cabinet ratified the guidelines recommended by a high power committee headed by Special Chief Secretary Revenue.

The guidelines are that the minimum plot size should be 3000 square metres with abutting rod width of 18 metres and there should be a minimum of three screens and the local should conform to the statutory master plan and zoning regulations. The promoter should have traffic impact study done by a qualified consultant and should also obtain no objection certificate from the Police department.

Multiplexes are not allowed in congested, settlement and residential areas and the structure should conform to the provisions of the National Building Code and also AP Fire Safety Act. Sixty percent of the the total built up area in corporations and fifty percent in other areas should be earmarked for parking. Structures which are more than 15 metres high should pay city level impact fee and fire precaution fund fee and the multiplexes should be under the control and management of a single management body.
