Hyderabad, June 16, 2006

Anticipating trouble from the Maoists in the ensuing Panchayat Raj elections, the State Government has requested the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to provide at least 20 companies of security personnel. They include 10 companies of State Police Force from the neighboring Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Orissa, Kerala and Karnataka States and the remaining 20 from Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) for the smooth conduct of the local body elections to be held in two phases on June 28 and July 2.

Highly placed sources said that there are indications that the Maoists may target important local political functionaries. Meanwhile, the Director General of Police (DGP) Swaranjit Sen held a video conference with district SPs two day ago to know the requirement and assess the situation.
