Andhra Pradesh News for 2003

2003 is a year of with many mixed things. Andhra Pradesh tasted both good achievements and some bad results.

Firstly the achievements:

1. Andhra Pradesh takes the pride of hosting the Ist Afro Asian Games - an event that puts Andhra Pradesh on the world sporting charts (apart from the already IT & Bio Technology)

2. Leaders from many countries round the world came to Andhra Pradesh to shake hands in joint ventures. The list includes Canadian President, German President, South African President amongst others.

3. India's Top IT Company - Infosys started its 7th Development Center followed by a similar center in Tata Consultancy Services

4. The Road works under the 'Prime Minister's pet project' - the Golden Quadrilateral. Deputy Prime Minister Sri LK Advani dedicated the Nellore section of the project to the Nation. Some bridge segments of the project - particularly at the Gosthani River were also completed.

5. ISRO GSAT 2 and PSLV-C5 experiments successfully conducted at SHAR.

6. By June 2003, Mobile Phone users in Andhra Pradesh reaches One-million mark

7. Andhra's Santha Sinha gets Ramon Magasasay Award 2003

8. Hi-Tech city gets Multi Modal Transport System(MMTS) was launched for the convinience of the Hyderabadi's to go to their offices in time.

9. Artificial Rains experiment in Anantapur was made a couple of times though farmers did not see any benifit our of it.

10. CM tours in Italy & Israel and other countries besides going to New Delhi a number of times to get more investments for the state. The State did suceed well in attracting IT and BioTechnology projects.

And now, the list of problems

This is a year of drought during the first half of the year. Farmers had a severe problem and are unable to put their crops. At the concluding of the November, the coastal districts saw a couple of cyclones and rough weather.

On the whole, the year showed extreme climatic conditions making it impossible for farmer to depend just on the conventional crops. FCI and other Governmental Departments have not completely succeeded in buying the farmer produce. As like previous years, some farmers, having taken huge amounts of loans as investments for their crops have found suicide to be the only way for their problem.

Another problem that the year saw was of Naxals - particularly the increased operations of the People's War Group. The Government of Andhra Pradesh has banned the naxals group though the group had operations even outside the states. They even dared to make an attempt on life of the Chief Minister Mr. N Chandrababu Naidu at Alipiri in Tirupati.
